In our Defense Position, we argue that US defense spending can be reduced without jeopardizing our national security. Jeffrey Sachs, a professor at Columbia University and bestselling author, provides a framework for such new thinking on defense in his recent book A New Foreign Policy: Beyond American Exceptionalism.

Sachs argues that the US must shift from a strategy of conventional military dominance to one that involves greater global cooperation and investments in global sustainable development. He urges an end to our perpetual involvement in “unwise and unwinnable” wars of choice.
